Our hens lay a beautiful variety of eggs. The colors range from white to cream to brown to green to blue. The color is entirely dependent on the kind of chicken. The Polish hens lay the smallest eggs in creamy white and beige. The Easter Egg chickens lay medium sized eggs in green to blue hues. The Red Star and Black Star hens, bred for production, lay brown eggs. And they can really push out some monster eggs!
Until yesterday the largest egg I bothered to measure was 95 grams. Yesterday, one of the hens pushed out a 98 gram egg. To put that in perspective, think about the jumbo sized eggs you can buy at the grocery store. They are only about 71 grams. This egg was a full 27 grams larger than a jumbo egg.
You know what I say? Poor hen! It’s no wonder I hear honking and yelling from the coop. That’s gotta hurt!
[…] I teased about something incredible you need to see. Here it is. A record-breaking egg here at […]
Robin that is the biggest egg I have ever seen! Wow. That little hen needs a special achievement award. Do you know which one laid that little omelet? Give her some extra treats! : )
Wow, that’s a big egg. It reminds me that my sister’s 2nd baby was 11 lbs, 2 oz. She deserved a prize, too.
Jeez!!!! That’s a lot of egg! I think that one deserves to hatch, just to see how big the chick will be.

Wowie. Your poor little hen!
That’s the size of a goose egg! What are you feeding them? Poor girl.
OMG that’s huge! what are you feeding her?
Hi, I have just collected an egg from te nest box of my hens. It weighs just over 5 ounces or 150 gms (approx, it’s 4 inches long and almost 7 inches round. I accused my better half of putting a goose egg in the box but as we haven’t any geese I believe him when he denies this. Its quite incredible
OUCH!
That looks brutal.

POOR HEN INDEED! 🙂 Funnily enough, one of our hens laid a record-setter yesterday (116 grams.) They have been laying since last November and we hadn’t gotten a whopper for awhile.
I would love some Polish hens. Love your blog!

Lovely blog! We have had Dominique chickens but finally the wild critters got them all. This year I orderd Cochin bantams. I don’t think we will get very big eggs but they are the cutest little chickens in the world so who cares about the eggs, right? My husband didn’t get it until we started letting them out in the yard. They are just adorable to watch with all their fluffiness. Adding you to my favorite blogs!
